Pinky came into our lives after the No-Name Storm that hit Florida in March, 1993. My office is in a strip mall and the roof was damaged by the wind. I assume Pinky's mom got in the ceiling area during or after the storm and gave birth to Pinky. I work in a medical clinic and at the end of a long day I was seeing my last patient who had come in with abdominal pain - which was due to food poisoning. As I was examining this person, I heard a soft, sweet MEOW from the ceiling - right above the exam table. I shook my head - not wanting to acknowledge what I heard. I continued the exam, palpating the patient's abdomen, when the MEOW came even louder. The patient and I looked at each other and I deadpanned "You need a cat scan." We both started laughing. After the exam the patient left and I stood on the exam table, pushed up a ceiling tile and found a tiny green eyed white kitten that was hungry and scared - no mama cat in sight. We never saw mama cat again. I really did not want a cat, much rather preferring a dog instead, so I called animal control to pick up the kitten the following morning. Well, they got to the office at 8 and I didn't open till 9AM. They wouldn't come out till the next business day - Monday - so I was stuck with this kitten for the weekend. That Friday evening I was sitting on the sofa when this little furball crawled up on me and fell asleep in the crook of my arm - and I knew he felt safe and had found his home. I cancelled animal control that following Monday and Pinky was the best companion anyone could want. He grew to 30 pounds - and was bigger than many dogs. When we had children later - they would get on Pinky's back and ride him. My daughter and Pinky were inseparable. Pinky acted more like a dog or person than a cat. Once, before the kids were born, my wife and I walked around the island where we live and Pinky came along with us. A neighbor pointed out we were being followed by a cat - we laughed. Pinky was a constant dependable tolerant companion - even when I tossed him in the pool. My wife, kids and I will miss him. In some ways, Pinky was our first kid. I am writing this as the eye of Hurricane Jeanne passes just 50 miles from our home. We have had to contend with Charley, Frances, Ivan and now Jeanne. We have had to evacuate twice - we brought Pinky's cremains with us. We did not evacuate this time. Perhaps these storms needed to remind me of Pinky's entry into our lives. Rest well, good and faithful friend - you are not forgotten, I have finally written your story so that others may see and know.

Personal Notes

Pinky got along well with everyone and especially with dogs. He did not, however, like the time we kept someone's dog for the weekend and the dog would clean out Pinky's food bowl every chance he had. No fighting, hissing or the like - but a rather miffed cat when he discovered the weekend guest took his food.
