The first thing I remember about Wilson happened right after we brought him home from the rescue organization. My parents and I sat in the middle of our living room, and Wilson plopped on the floor with us. We talked to him and petted him all afternoon. He seemed like such a calm, sweet dog at the time. Little did we know...

A week after that afternoon in the living room, Wilson became a spunky, energetic, silly boy. We gave him the nickname Wild Wilson. He was good at many things, but walking calmly and slowly was certainly not one of them! When we let him in the house, he ran like crazy across our dining room floor. Sometimes he would run up to me and just stare at me, like he was saying, "Hello! Pet me!"

But the high energy, running, and silliness were only part of his personality. He was extremely affectionate, and he got a little bent out of shape if he wasn't being petted constantly. He slept in my bed every night, and he liked to stretch his body out across my legs. He loved to cuddle in bed, and even though they didn't want to admit it, my parents absolutely loved having him cuddle in their bed.
Every morning, I would come into my mother's room right when her alarm went off. We would turn on the news and Wilson would jump onto the bed and lay between us. He was a total cuddlebug.

Wilson was also one of the smartest dogs I've met. His favorite thing in the world was food, and around the time we fed him every morning, we would say something like "It's time to feed the dogs." Well, Mr. Smartypants began to understand what "feed the dogs" meant, so when he heard it he would go crazy, jumping on us and running circles. He did this with a lot of other words, too. Eventually we had to start spelling things out, like
"We need to F-E-E-D the D-O-G-S." Well guess what? After a while, he figured that out, too!

Wilson had a large vocabulary. His favorite phrases were "Let's get some breakfast!" and "Wake up Dad!" Waking up Dad consisted of jumping on my dad's side of my parents' bed, kissing his face until he opened his eyes, and, for good measure, laying down next to Dad to get cuddles out of him. After I started using Wilson to wake up my parents, they turned it around and told him, "Wake up Merlyn!" He recognized my name and kissed my face until I got up. Truthfully, Wilson interpreted "Wake up this person!" as "Cuddle with this person!" He never missed an opportunity to get some extra love.

Wilson was a silly, energetic, affectionate, sweet, loving and occasionally aggravating dog. The years I spent with him were, and will continue to be, some of the best years of my life.

I wrote this for a journal entry in English class a week ago. I just typed the first things I felt and thought with minimal editing, so this might not be my absolute best writing. Enjoy.

Personal Notes

He was such a sweet dog and my best friend. Our family won't be the same without silly Wilson.

Wilson was the perfect dog for Merlyn. He absolutely loved to be touched and since that is Merlyn's way of seeing the world, it was a perfect match. He was a source of entertainment each and every day from watching him run every where to him jumping into bed with anyone who would let him. When we adopted a second dog he bonded with her immediately and since Emily was blind he was her constant companion when outside. He had even decided they the two of them needed to take walks around the neighborhood together - while we were at work! Our fence will never be the same!! I wish I had more recent pictures of him, but here is one with Wilson (tan color) with Emily (white and brown).

Hileman family,

My condolences for the loss of your pet and family member. I wanted to share a poem in hopes that it will bring a smile to your face.

A Bridge Called Love

It takes us back to brighter years
To happier sunlit days
And to precious moments
That will be with us always

And these fond recollections
Are treasured in the heart
To bring us always close to those
From whom we had to part

There is a bridge of memories
From Earth to Heaven above...
It keeps our dear ones near us

It's the bridge that we call Love

~Unknown

Wilson will surely be missed. He was a funny dog. What he lacked in brains he made up for with affection and a strong zest for adventure. Whether it was chasing deer out in the wash or gulping down marbles and butter Wilson always had his paws on the accelerator! Wilson was the consummate companion, he thrived on being with his family (especially around dinner time). One of my favorite games with Wilson was "let's see what else he'll eat." After watching every type of fruit and vegetable disappear in a split second I eventually gave up.
Wilson had a keen sense for when it was his walking time. All I had to do was get tennis shoes out and he only got excited when I was actually taking him out, he just knew. When he would come back into the house he never came in without Emily and all you had to tell him was to go get her and he would do exactly that. Wilson will be missed by his people and his canine housemate. RIP Mr. Wilson.

I remember Wilson when you brought him home, Mike and I watched him for a few days. He would run from the backyard through the side doggy door, across the dining room (sliding on his paws) into the living room and plopped directly on his bed and he did this at least a dozen times right in a row. He was a spunky dog who loved to run anywhere! When you brought Emily home he was so nice to her, this was his nature just a sweet dog. He will be missed by the Hileman Family.
