Words can't begin to describe how dearly we loved our Daisy Girl. Yesterday we said goodbye to her after having her in our family for 12 wonderful years. A member of the family, that's exactly what she was. It's hard to believe she's gone.
She was the sweetest, most gentle dog we've ever known.
We rescued her from the SPCA in Austin in January of 1998.
The Tuesday that I brought her home, we had all sorts of snacks and goodies waiting for her. She wasn't sure what to do! I think she was overwhelmed with happiness and wasn't used to all the attention. So, she took the little puppy snack I gave her and tried to bury it behind the TV! She dug an imaginary "hole" in our carpet--no carpet was destroyed! But to her, she had dug a hole..and she carefully placed her little snack or bone or whatever it was..in the "hole" and then gently covered it up with her nose..as she pushed the "imaginary dirt" over it! It was the funniest thing I'd ever seen! And at first, I thought, oh boy...she's "off" or Loco! HA! But evidentally she had been out running stray for some time before a kind lady found her and took her to the SPCA. Thank God for that. They were saving her for adoption and we were the lucky ones that found her! She always seemed to know that she'd been given another chance. She never gave us one minute of grief....nothing malicious, or bad. She did run off, just once. Right after we moved to the country. She must've been chasing a rabbit, because she was gone for 20 hrs. I was frantic. I drove all around the country side calling her name, putting up posters, crying all the while! At 3 the next morning, there was a scratch at the back door and my husband got up to see if it was her and sure enough, it was! THANK GOD! I got up and quickly discovered that she had turned herself into a canine pin cushion. She was COVERED head to paws in prickly pear cactus needles. I spent hours getting them out with the tweezers, while sobbing and telling her how glad I was to see her...and to please not run off and do this again! She knew. And she never did that again. She had 2 skunk encounters...what a mess that was. She was happiest when she was hunting lizards and once saved all of us from a rattlesnake that was only feet away from us in our backyard. She alerted us and then ran to us to tell us where it was. She ran backwards to us..never even getting within range of the snake's strike. She was smart. Very smart.
Daisy could see Angels. No kidding. She would run around, looking up at the sky and would jump up and bark...when there was nothing there...that we could see, anyway! She loved chasing bubbles, too. It got so bad that we couldn't even say "bubbles" because she'd get so excited. She hated guns. Just the sight of them sent her into a frenzy. We'll never know why, but in her past life (before us) someone must've shot one close to her and scared her, it's all we could figure. She smiled and her eyes lit up...so did ours. We love her still. There isn't a single memory for us of our last 12 years that she isn't attached to. Both of our sons have grown up with her and she has been our friend and companion and our little girl for a long time. We miss her like crazy and always will.
Sleep peacefully Little Daisy Bell, we will always love you, you're always in our hearts. Forever.
