Ruby was adopted by my brother, Billy. He worked at the Animal Humane Association here in Albuquerque. He used to take the dogs to adoption fairs around town. One day he stopped by my mom's house with a cute little puppy. Her legs were weak and they would slide from under her. We later found out she had distemper as a puppy, causing nerve damage resulting in the weakness in her legs.

The next day my brother called my mom and told her Ruby was going to be euthanized since she was unadoptable due to her medical problem. My mom, Barbara, told him to bring her home.

Ruby was a cute, adorable, sweet, lovable puppy. She grew into a wonderful, good tempered dog. She would overcome even more obstacles in her life. When she was about 2 or 3 years old, she got out of the fenced yard and was hit by a car, fracturing her hip. Ruby was never a dog to jump on furniture...she was welcome to do it but she never did. When she was recovering from her broken hip, she decided that was the time to start. To our amazement, Ruby got on the bed...probably the only time in her life to do and with a broken hip. Needless to say, Ruby recovered from her fractured hip.

Ruby's ordeals were yet to be over. A few years later, while in the back yard, a rogue pit bull jumped the fence and attacked Ruby. After surgery to repair her esophogus and a week in the hospital, Ruby was on the mend.

Ruby was a fighter. She was determined not to leave this life without living it to the fullest...and she did. Ruby lived almost 14 years. She was determined not to die. The last day of her life she would not allow herself to fall asleep. We knew the time had come, yet Ruby was determined to stay with us as long as she could. She laid on her bed in the living room taking in everything. Even as we sat with her petting her and telling her we loved her, she did not close her eyes. That was on February 4, 2010. That night she finally went to sleep for the last time. The next morning, February 5, 2010, sometime between 4:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Ruby became our angel. Now she's with Jaz in heaven. Take care of us Ruby and Jaz. We will love and miss you forever!

Personal Notes

Death is nothing at all, I have only slipped away into the next room. I am I and you are you. Whatever we were to each other we still are. Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way you always used. Why should I be out of your mind because I am out of your sight. All is well, nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before. Condolences from Dublin Ireland on the passing of Ruby Cruse.
