From the first day Barrett saw water he was like a seal. Even to the point of diving to the bottom of the stream, river, lake or pool to retrieve objects. He loved to swim and retrieve until you got tired. He would jump right into any type of water...warm, cold or dirty it didn't matter. He would even take a swim in the pool by himself during the winter months. His retrieving skills also included catching Frisbees on the run.

Barrett had a great life loving everybody and everything. He loved to go on hikes and was quite a rock scrambler on the desert trails in his heyday. At times he would go back to the last person in the hiking group to circle them as to round them up, anyone was welcome in his pack.

He was very smart and learned tricks easily. Balancing treats on his nose then catching them. He was really good at playing dead after being shot with your finger. He could sit, stay, lie down, roll over and crawl (be sneaky) all on command. I think everyone’s favorite trick was how he could dive of the side of the pool and go to bottom of a 7 foot pool and retrieve sunken objects. It was truly amazing to watch him under water dog paddling his way to the bottom.

Barrett was a great friend and will be eternally in our thoughts of all the great times we had over the last 12 years. It has been hard not waking to him anxiously awaiting the daily routine and we will miss him waiting at the door for our return. But, let’s not be sad for his departure… rather joyful for all the laughs and great times we shared. I know it's what he would want. I’m sure he is having a blast swimming everyday in doggy heaven.

When you get the chance rock some Pink Floyd for Barrett, the band that inspired his name.

Nobody knows where you are, how near or how far.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Pile on many more layers and I'll be joining you there.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
And we'll bask in the shadow of yesterday's triumph,
sail on the steel breeze.
Come on you boy child, you winner and loser,
come on you miner for truth and delusion, and shine!
-Rodger Waters, Richard Wright, David Gilmour

Be a good boy Barrett wherever you are…Shine on your Crazy Diamond!

Personal Notes

Blessings to you. Your Barrett sounds like he was the coolest dog!!! So many talents...and a party animal, too, it seems. I pray for peace and comfort for you. We all here understand your deep love and the pain of loss. Barrett will forever be connected to you through your love for each other, and he will meet you at the Rainbow Bridge one day with kisses and nuzzles. My Nala will be his friend until you are with him again!

“I will lend to you for a while,
a Pup,” God said,
for you to love him while he lives
and mourn for him when he's dead.
Maybe for twelve or fourteen years,
or maybe two or three
But will you, 'till I call him back,
take care of him for me.

He'll bring his charms to gladden you
and should his stay be brief,
you'll always have his memories
as solace for your grief.
I cannot promise he will stay,
since all from earth return
But there are lessons taught below
I want this pup to learn.

I've looked the whole world over
in search of teachers true,
and from the folk that crowd's life's land
I have chosen you.
Now will you give him all your love
nor think the labour vain,
nor hate me when I come to take my Pup back again.

I fancied that I heard them say
"Dear Lord Thy Will be Done,"
For all the joys this Pup will bring,
the risk of grief we'll run.
