"Nothing can compare to the unconditional love and service that your dog gives you....when you sleep at night, he's guarding you."

These are the words that the vet told us last Friday when we took Piolo to the clinic for treatment. We told him that we are prepared for the worse and asked him if Piolo will recover. He told us that only God can heal the sick because doctors are just instruments.

We don't want to remember Piolo's ordeal so I won't describe his suffering. We want to remember his funny antics and the way he showed us that he loved us- his human family.

Here are our fondest memories of Piolo da Pogi Dog:

- When mom underwent surgery last 2005, my sister and I took turns in staying with mom in the hospital çoz we can't let Piolo be alone in the house for 24 hours. He patiently waited outside the door for our mom until she got back a few days later. And during that time our mom would tell me or my sister "How's Piolo?" He's like our youngest brother and our mom is his mom too. She's his big boss and we're just his human siblings. =)

- When I went to Malaysia also in 2005, my mom was already undergoing chemotherapy. I call home everyday and my mom would let Piolo hear me through the phone's receiver. He's not barking but my mom said his tail was wagging and he's trying to put his head on the receiver whenever I call his name. And when I got back home, I gave him my hankie 'coz that's our routine every time I go back from work. He would toss the hankie in the air and wag his tail as if telling me to play catch the hankie with him.

- He's a mixed breed or "askal" in Filipino term, but we were able to teach him how to sit.

- He hates taking a bath. But when he does, right after bathing, he would roll on the sofa or on the bed çoz he hates being wet.

- His favorite food: Spaghetti

- His pet peeve: letting someone scratch his back [near the butt area, =D ]

- He hates it when the LPG tank, water container and laundry bag are taken out and back. Maybe he was thinking "why are our stuff being taken away???" =)

- He used to take a plastic bag of veggies or few grocery items from my mom whenever she gets back from the market. She'll tell him "Piolo, come and help me with the veggies/grocery." And he'd run outside, take the plastic bag from mom and go back inside the house with it. He'd take the plastic bag and play with it, and all the veggies or canned goods would roll on the floor. =D

Personal Notes

Death is nothing at all, I have only slipped away into the next room. I am I and you are you. Whatever we were to each other we still are. Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way you always used. Why should I be out of your mind because I am out of your sight. All is well, nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before. Condolences from Dublin Ireland on the loss of Piolo.

I will always remember how he used to sit outside the door and wait for me to come home. Then he would jump on me and wait for me to hug him.

A love so unconditional can never be justly described by words.

I hope he's still waiting for me, so I can hug him again.

Those who mean the most to us
Are never really gone.
For in our thoughts and in our hearts
Their memory still lives on
So may you find that passing time
Can somehow help to heal
Those memories will ease the loss
And sorrow that you feel

“I will lend to you for a while,
a Pup,” God said,
for you to love him while he lives
and mourn for him when he's dead.
Maybe for twelve or fourteen years,
or maybe two or three
But will you, 'till I call him back,
take care of him for me.

He'll bring his charms to gladden you
and should his stay be brief,
you'll always have his memories
as solace for your grief.
I cannot promise he will stay,
since all from earth return
But there are lessons taught below
I want this pup to learn.

I've looked the whole world over
in search of teachers true,
and from the folk that crowd's life's land
I have chosen you.
Now will you give him all your love
nor think the labour vain,
nor hate me when I come to take my Pup back again.

I fancied that I heard them say
"Dear Lord Thy Will be Done,"
For all the joys this Pup will bring,
the risk of grief we'll run.

Before he was taken to vet, before we put him to sleep, he barked the last time when my dad came home . He was struggling to get up and bark, but still he gave his service for the last time. And my mom said, after he was injected with the medicine my dad heard him whimpered slightly and thought he's already sleeping after a few minutes, so he called on to mom so they can go home with Piolo's remains. But she saw him breathed his last breath when he heard mom's voice and saw mom's face the last time. That was his last goodbye to his mom. And he finally went to sleep.
