Licorice Conner passed away humanely and peacefully at Thoreau Veterinary Hospital on Saturday October 25, 2008. He was surrounded in love by his Mom and Dad, his loving companions Michael and Tara Conner. He went to be with the Lord after complications from a courageous and valiant 2 1/2 year battle with hemangiosarcoma (cancer of the blood vessels). Licorice was adopted into the Conner Family and became a permanent part of their hearts and lives on November 1, 1997.
Up until the day before his passing he remained spry and playful, ran quickly and purred loudly when his name was called and continued to provide love and comfort to his family. He was a constant and loyal companion to Tara with whom he shared her pillow nightly and lovingly pawed her face as his nose touched hers, often following her around as she readied herself each morning, awaited her return at the top of the stairs each evening and jumping to her shoulder for hugs and kisses.
He is survived by his feline brother JayJay, his 11 year companion with whom he shared his love of bird watching, spider chasing, his favorite perch, his food and water dishes and his favorite toys and hiding spaces. JayJay continues his search for his beloved brother and lovingly rubs the spots where he was known to lay. He is also survived by his two canine sisters Maggie Mae and Fiona. Although they never were able to see eye to eye, they too feel his loss and whimper as they look for the cat who through his illness always put up a good fight and always had them afraid of his presence.
Licorice was the inspiration for the female character Licorice in the novel entitled "Christmas Eve" by acclaimed author James R. Fox.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, to please support your local animal shelters. A small donation can go a long way to bring happiness to abused, neglected and homeless animals whose main purpose in life in to bring companionship and joy to others.
A small memorial service will be held at his home on Saturday November 1, 2008 - the 11 year anniversary of his adoption.
The family appreciates your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time and asks that all prayer offerings are made to St. Francis of Assisi, Patron Saint of the animals.
Blessed are you, Lord God,
maker of all living creatures.
On the fifth and sixth days of creation,
you called forth fish in the sea,
birds in the air and animals on the land.
You inspired St. Francis to call all animals
his brothers and sisters.
We ask you to bless this animal.
By the power of your love,
enable it to live according to your plan.
May we always praise you
for all your beauty in creation.
Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen.
Thank you for visiting.
