Peanut Butter & Jelly, passed away on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 after a courageous two year battle with kidney disease. Born in the basement of my childhood home I watched them evolve from timid kittens afraid to climb stairs to fearless and pampered felines with distinct personalities and discriminating tastes for the finer things in life. Their cremated remains will reside at the Pet Cemetery in Hartsdale, NY.
The two siblings were avid bird, squirrel and fly hunters and were gifted soccer players. They were playful pranksters that enjoyed a hearty game of "hide & seek" right before a visit to the vets office and "deal or no deal" as I tried to make a bed or read the Sunday newspaper. They enjoyed belly rubs, cuddling during Eyewitness News, air kisses, and cod liver oil. As a matter of fact, Peanut Butter & Jelly loved all things fishy and spent a great deal of time in the kitchen if they smelled the aroma of catfish being fried or heard a tin of tuna fish being opened.
In short, they loved life and they took great care to demonstrate their happiness with constant purring, nuzzles and leg rubs. They walked like panthers and behaved like royalty and I often believed that I was their pet not the other way around.
I will miss the touch of a wet nose on my neck if I slept through the alarm, the pitter patter of paws running down the stairs to greet me hello, and even the indignant "meow" if I dared to interrupt their nap time.
Prior to their illness, Peanut Butter & Jelly enjoyed frequent admiration of their appearance and athleticism. Household guests and fellow pet owners at the veterinarian's office would often marvel at their shiny black coats and stealth jumps on to the banisters, window sills and refrigerator top. As the kidney disease spread, their movements slowed and they would get frustrated by their diminished agility. Illness and old age, however, could not rob them of their dignity and they behaved like kings until death. This holiday season, please consider making a charitable donation in their memory to your local humane society or animal shelter.
Peanut Butter & Jelly were beloved pets, faithful friends, and loyal companions who provided unconditional love and countless memories for nearly 16 years. I cherish our brief time together and I pray that they are resting peacefully in God's lap.
His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. (Matthew 25:23)
