Luke was a wolf. He was abandoned as a puppy and left to starve. His previous owners had moved away leaving him chained to a tree. I found him half starved to death. I brought him home and began the long process of nursing him back to health. At first he was very afraid. It took a year before I was able to train him. I taught him how to use a radio fence. It was such a glorious thing to see him playing in the fields surrounding our house. Unfortunately, he didn't get along with our other wolf, Smokey. I had to keep them separated in large kennels. They were both very happy. All was well until one day disease came to Luke. I had saved him from starvation, but I could not save him from disease. He grew sicker and sicker. Toward the end he could barely stand. On Sunday July 29, 2007 I found him laying by his water bucket. Death had claimed him. Luke, you will never be forgotten. There will always be a special place in my heart for you. You were wild, but never aggressive. You were a gentle soul. Rest easy now, wolf, you have earned it.
