Howie was the BEST DOG EVER. He was one of 10 black lab mix pups, and was advertised in the Thrifties in the Oregonian newspaper for free. Our 3 boys were 7,4 and 1 year old. Nathaniel named him Howie, while we were driving home. He was so gentle and loving and devoted to us his whole life. He never had any health problems, except his thyroid these last couple years. He lived with us in the same house for 12 years.
He went quickly last night, right at dinner time. All of us were home, thank God. So we all got to say goodbye to him. He went ever so gracefully, and I think it was a heart attack or stroke. He died in Nathaniel's arms. We do have a one year old Jack
Russel mix, named Spot, but he won't take the place of Howie. Howie spent the last year of his life training Spot! And what a good teacher he was.
We took him to Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital to have him cremated.
They sent us his paw print and locks of his hair. Howie wanted a very special friend, Linda, to have this gift also. Linda took care of Howie, for many years, during the day, when we were working. They had a very special relationship!
Goodbye Howie. See you in heaven.

Personal Notes

Howie was very well known in our neighborhood. Everyone asks about you Howie, and they cry when I tell them you have died!

Howie was my neighbor. He was a mellow old dog that liked stuffed animal toys. He would often leave his stuffed toys near my porch or in the side yard. He seemed very happy and content in life and will be missed.

Howie was the canine king of the neighborhood. At the parties we had, when they were outside, Howie and Spot would come over and have their own get-togethers with Bella and Ulu. We're gone from Portland now and we miss very much the parties with the neighbors, kids and dogs. We'll miss Howie very much, and we're glad he had a great life and finished as such a grand old man.

I remember Howie as part of the Hawkey family. Every where they went, Howie was right there. We went to the beach one trip and took Howie, as he was getting older we had to help him into the truck. He always liked to go for rides and enjoyed the beach. When Spot came onto the scene he first was annoyed by the little rascal, but as time went by Spot's presence added spark into Howies’ life. Spot kept Howie young and became such a great friend. He will be missed….

There'll never ne another one like you!

You will be forever in our hearts! Thank you Hawkeys for sharing your beautiful Howie Dog with us. Coming back to Portland will never be the same for me without seeing his beautiful sweet face again. I know you will all miss him dearly.

Our entire family loved Howie, and along with so many others agreed he was a wonderful gentleman. His kind, loving personality endeared him to all he met. He was truly a dog in a million. It makes me very sad to know he is gone, but he will always live in the hearts of those who loved him. I am so glad his family has lots of photos of him.

I wrote on the other tribute before I saw this one... I want to tell you about an online pet loss support group, where we talk about losing our pets and offer each other caring support, understanding and sympathy. Delphi requires you to register to join but it is free. It can be found at http://forums.delphiforums.com/poaa/start
I'm so sorry for your loss of Howie.
