In August of 2011, this stray cat started hanging around our yard. I was reluctant to feed her because I already had a cat, Rusty, and I did not want another. But she was so friendly, I couldn’t help myself. While it did not take long for Annabelle to charm her way into our home and our lives, it took her many years to be truly comfortable with us and even then she never liked to be held. What Annabelle did like was a vigorous head rub and a good scratch behind the ears. She also liked to hang out in the garden, often finding a cozy spot under the rosemary bushes or tucked behind the fennel where she could take a nap. It was always a great pleasure to have Annabelle supervise my gardening. It was also fun to watch her stare down the dogs who passed in front of our house, thereby proving that she was as brave as she was beautiful. Sadly, after many months of illness, it became time for Annabelle’s life to end. She was euthanized on January 1, 2022 in the company of some of those who loved her. During her decade with us, Annabelle spent so much time in the garden that I suspect she had many friends and acquaintances with passers by that I have never met. Thanks to all who gave her a pat on the head or a friendly word. May her memory be a blessing for all.
