On June 6th, 2006, 10:33 p.m. our beloved baby in her 13th year after battling with all her strength and energy, took her final 3 breaths passing away with Mommy and Daddy by her side as she lay in her cradle. With a beautiful “angelic” peaceful look on her face Sadie left on her journey to Rainbow Bridge to reunite with her “big” little sister Heidi. Our sweet baby girl gone forever.

Adopted from the Toronto Humane Society in July, 1994 at 6 months of age. My psychic ability sent me to the T.H.S. that day to come together with Sadie. The first pup we saw as we entered the adoption room. Putting out her paw, our hearts melted. Sadie immediately became an important integral part of our family. Four weeks later she accompanied us on a memorable vacation to P.E.I. What a scally wag she was - running down the beach with some of our clothes she’d stolen.

Seldom would Daddy leave home without his baby girl. Cradled in Daddy’s lap enjoying car rides, feeling safe and secure. Often Sadie would sit up and “wave” to other passengers as she “drove by”. She enjoyed weekend journeys cross border shopping; …Sam’s Club became her friend too. Sitting in shopping carts many would stop to pat, admire and comment on her beauty.

Where we went, she went. As a freelance photographer, Daddy had the opportunity to take her on assignments; seldom was she left at home. Snuggled in her hand knitted blanket, baby Barney by her side in the car, she anxiously awaited Daddy’s return. This continuous relationship made our bond grow stronger each and every day.

Sept. ‘98 baby girl Heidi was adopted becoming Sadie’s “big” little sister/shadow. She adored Sadie even though Sadie’s nose was out of joint. Sadie began to appreciate and love Heidi too (see Heidi Newland’s memorial) The two of them deserved the best. Fortunate enough to have loving parents and a kind hearted Aunt Chris who would care for them as if they were her own.

In her 7th year, something was not quite right…always thirsty…Daddy suspected diabetes. Extensive tests confirmed these suspicions. Diabetes had become a reality. Stoic as Sadie was, she quickly learned to take her two daily insulin injections knowing she would be rewarded with a piece of broccoli. Sadie would bend her head forward to receive her injections. Her diet changed but still got a little cheat treat from time to time. Her health improved and she lead a normal life. Sadie loved to eat especially when her diabetic formula was mixed with a little broccoli au gratin and chicken “yumma”. We spoiled her; she loved us for it.

Sadie’s pastime was singing; what a beautiful voice. 4-5 times a day she would give us an operatic performance; the best being just before dinner. Sadie taught Heidi to sing falsetto. Some days they would perform as a duo. What a wonderful memory.

Another memorable family vacation was our cottage rental in Northern Ontario. Sadie loved to stroll along the beach, wading in the water.

Upon losing Heidi, Sadie’s health declined due to the stress and anxiety of missing Heidi. Her diabetes went out of control but with love, determination and endless devotion, her health condition improved. In her 11th year Sadie lost most of her vision, resulting in her becoming totally dependent on us but learned to live in her dark world with confidence wherever she was.

Blessed to have had you as part of our family, now you are part of God’s family. Treated with respect, you in return gave us your unconditional love; you were our pet child for over 12 years. A day will never go by you are not in our hearts. One day we will all be together on Rainbow Bridge. You are in God’s hands now; safe, secure, a puppy forever.

Love Mommy & Daddy

Personal Notes

What a beautiful story you tell of lives intertwined with love and fun. How lucky you and Sadie were that you were with Sadie in her last hours. My baby boy, Thor, died alone overnight at the vet and for that I will never forgive myself. I'm happy for Sadie that she's with Heidi while they wait for their loving parents at the Bridge. Warm hugs of comfort from Kingsville, Maryland.
